Larry and Karina Hogan go together like grapes on a vine, and food and wine lovers are the beneficiaries. "We just won our 52nd Gold Medal in seven years!" Larry exclaims, clearly thrilled that his hunch about the Cuyama Valley, straddling Santa Barbara and Ventura counties east of the Santa Ynez Valley, has proved correct. In 1982, Larry planted the first commercial vineyard in the valley, after running cattle there for many years. As a closet winemaker, he'd noticed the climate was similar to Napa's. With a roll of the dice, he planted his vines, later selling the property which became Barnwood Winery and later, Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard.
